The Tokyo Phonographers Union in conjunction with Launch Pad Gallery present "Future Sound / Future Vision" for World Listening Day 2018.
This is a collaborative art exhibition between sound and visual artists. Sound walks, workshops, and performances will be included.
While most everyone understands what visual art is, here are some key points regarding sound art:
Phonography is the art of field recording or the use of field recordings with the intent of creating a work of art as opposed to the pure
documentation of natural sounds. Both processed and unprocessed (straight up) field recordings are used to create phonographic works.
The Tokyo Phonographers Union is just one of the many phonographers' collectives worldwide dedicated to the art of phonography, acoustic ecology,
and generally concerned with listening or attending to the world around us.
World Listening Day is co-organized by the World Listening Project (WLP) and the Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE). July 18 was chosen
because it is the birthday of Canadian writer, educator, philosopher, visual artist, and composer R. Murray Schafer. His effort leading the
World Soundscape Project and his seminal book, 'The Tuning of the World', inspired global interest in a new field of research and practice known as Acoustic Ecology.
A soundwalk is a walk with the intent of listening to the sounds of the environment, discovering and enjoying the natural soundscape of a
given area or neighborhood. (landscape : soundscape; landmark : soundmark)
We look forward to your visiting the gallery and participating in the many events we will be posting quite soon.

14:00~16:00 - Takashi Tsuda's Workshop: "Mimi o Sumasu" in Setagaya:
This workshop attempts to share a little secret on how to "listen, attend to, and enjoy sound." A simple orientation will be followed by a casual
two-hour walk around the neighborhood. A familiar walk, with a little attentiveness, opens up a surprisingly rich vista of sounds. Starting with
"listening" then "attending to" and "listening to silence," three states of consciousness will be introduced.
Fee: ¥1000 adult / ¥5F00 (under 13) includes snack • Limit:15 people (reservation only)
17:00~19:30 - Phonography Meeting in Setagaya: Performance and Panel Discussion:
The terms "field recording," "sounscape" and "soundart" reflect a multi-faceted world woven from a myriad perspectives and interests. A group of
artists and researchers active in the areas of field recording and soundscape present an improvisation performance and lead a panel discussion on
the themes of "listening to sound," "enjoying sound" and "how to engage with our everyday spaces."
Fee: ¥2000 • Limit: 50 people
One pays little attention to the existence of "sound" in our daily lives yet we are being continuously surrounded and influenced by it. Birds at dawn,
a boisterous festival, water flowing down a river, the roar of the underpass on a rainy day, the crowds cheering at a field day at an elementary school,
the bustle of a pedestrian paradise and much more. When one considers the "sound" alone, packed tightly therein are the fragments from the life and times of a community.
The Zenpukuji Pond Project celebrates World Listening Day 2011 on Monday, July 18th in Zenpukuji, Tokyo. The all day event engages the community in an exploration
of soundscape by combining a soundwalk, field recording, discussion of shared activities, and live performances by the participants.
We will meet at 10am at the park entrance down the street from Youkobo Art Space. (PLease see Youkpbo's access map.)
The morning soundwalk around the pond at Zenpukuji Park will be led by Keiko Torigoe and recorded by Marcos Fernandes . The afternoon discussion forum at Youkobo Art
Space invites the participants to share their experiences and thoughts on the soundwalk and field recording activities. The performances will feature the Tokyo
Phonographers Union in a live improvisation using field recordings including materials from the morning soundwalk, a collaborative performance with voice and field
recordings exploring the notion of the human body as a recorder as well as an audience participation piece facilitated by vocalist Yuki Saga.
Zenpukuji Pond Project is organized and presented by Keiko Torigoe, whose work with the concept of soundscape includes various research, environmental design and
workshops as well as translations of R. Murray Shafer's writings, and musician, phonographer and soundartist Marcos Fernandes in conjunction with Youkobo Art Space.
This event is free and open to all ages. There are restaurants nearby Youkobo Art Space but articipants are encouraged to bring a lunch.

Possible Spaces is a forum for the presentation of phonographic works including straight field recordings, soundscape compositions, solo and collective improvisations.
It attempts to engage the audience in an investigation of sound as art, our relationship to our sound environment and an awareness of acoustic ecology. The importance
of human hearing is often overshadowed by our current visual preoccupation. Possible Spaces attempts to help reconnect us with and retrain us to decipher the
information provided by our sound environment.
Possible Spaces was first presented in 2002 by musician and sound artist Marcos Fernandes in San Diego, California where he was active for many years as performer, producer
and curator. After several editions, the series was discontinued due to the lack of participants in the area, and the concept lay dormant for several years until Fernandes
returned to his hometown of Yokohama, Japan in the fall of 2008. Aware of the interest in field recordings in this country, Fernandes decided to introduce the concept of
phonography, or the art of field recordings, coined by Fernandes and his colleagues a decade ago (see http://www.phonography.org),
and its performative aspects to a wider local audience.
Fernandes hopes to organize a local phonographers union, a collective of field recordists who perform together, often improvising to create 'possible' soundscapes composed
of various disparate phonographs. The Seattle Phonographers Union is one such group Fernandes has performed with and similar unions exist in Chicago, New England and London
to name a few. (www.kazbar.org/spu/)
The first World Listening Day happens on Sunday, July 18, 2010. Organized by the World Listening Project, the purposes of World Listening Day are to celebrate the practice of
listening as it relates to the world around us, environmental awareness, and acoustic ecology, raise awareness about issues related to the World Soundscape Project, World Listening
Project, World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, and individual and group efforts to creatively explore phonography, and design and implement educational initiatives which explore
these concepts and practices.
July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of the Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer. Schafer is one of the founders of the Acoustic Ecology
movement. The World Soundscape Project, which he directed, is an important organization which has inspired a lot of activity in this field, and his book Soundscape: The Tuning
of the World helped to define many of the terms and background behind the acoustic ecology movement. (http://www.worldlisteningproject.org)

A native of Yokohama, Japan, Marcos Fernandes spent over three decades in California as performer, producer and curator. He has performed in the US, Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong and
Japan as a solo improviser, phonographer and as percussionist/sound artist with various ensembles, dancers and visual artists. Fernandes' work can be heard on over 50 recordings
on Accretions, Bake/Staalplaat, Circumvention, Pax, Pfmentum, Phonography.org, Public Eyesore, Solitary B and others.

Corey Fuller is a sound artist and musician from Tokyo, Japan. Growing up between several different cultures and traveling extensively as a child have made geography and a sense
of place major components of Fuller’s music. His work is a slow and gradual music composed of infinitesimal details comprised of processed and delicately treated acoustic
instruments, field recordings, and other sound sources.

Nobuhiko Nakayama is a musician and sound designer based in Tokyo. He has performed and recorded as an electronic musician since the '80s. His field recording-based compositions
can be heard on his work with the duo Kaze Hakase.
