The Matsue Branch of Bank of Japan was built in 1938. In 1981, the building was declared a Cultural Property and given to Shimane Prefecture then in 2000 to the City of Matsue. Located in the old merchant district, Karakoro Kobo was then established by the Department of Tourism's downtown revitalization plan as a community space that reflected the city's rich feudal history by featuring the traditional arts and crafts of the region. The restored building now houses various shops that produce and sell crafts, spaces for classes and workshops as well as gallery spaces for exhibitions.
